“What is a song? A song is a dream… a place to be. Somewhere you can live. And in that place, there are no walls. No boundaries. No locks. No keys. You can go anywhere…”
Following their triumphant production of The Ferryman, Tony-winning Playwright Jez Butterworth and Oscar and Tony-winning Director Sam Mendes have reunited on Broadway for The Hills of California.
In the sweltering summer heat, the Webb sisters return to their childhood home in the English seaside – the run-down Sea View Guest House – to say “goodbye” to their ailing mother. When memories from their youth come flooding back, the sisters must confront their past and untangle a web of secrets, betrayals, and profound emotional bonds.
This “relentlessly entertaining new play” (The New York Times) transports audiences to the 1970s, then further back to the 1950s when the sisters, dreaming of becoming a famous singing group, had their lives changed forever. With stunning design and glorious music, The Hills of California “is a magnificent production. I never wanted it to end.” (Chicago Tribune)
